Today, I studied the end course A Discourse Approach in Reading. My opinion, this course was difficult to learn. I thought read for detailed information to be difficult. This course was helps me to more practices reading and writing skill.     I studied construction from made exercise. A discourse approach in reading are practice found the topic, main idea, and details. And significance identify genre of text and discourse markers, cause/effect discourse markers. Finally, my attitude towards the lesson was not easy. But, I can learn more from practice reading skills whether was read books, articles, story and other.

Problem and Solution is a pattern of organization where information in a passage is expressed as a dilemma or concerning issue (a problem) and something that was, can be, or should be done to remedy this issue (solution or attempted solution).  There are also a few signal words which may indicate that information in a passage is ordered in the problem and solution pattern of organization: propose, solution, answer, issue, problem, problematic, remedy, prevention, and fix. I read text 2 about species of whales and highlight the discourse markers in the text.       I answered questions that which statement was true or false. Teacher gave new sheet about "Exemplification" The teacher explained some information of this lesson. I read the text about "College students' Pressures". I completed the diagram and highlighted the exemplification markers. "Exemplification" was meant uses examples to explain, convince, or illustrate a general idea. I studied Definition and Classification. Identifying and understanding texts that contain definition and classification will help your academic reading. I studied about Definition Markers, Classification Markers, technical terms, and common word to help define them in the text. "Cause and Effect". I read text “The Effects of Stress” and answer the questions. Identify cause and effect, cause/effect Markers, and complete the sentence. The main idea of topic “Too much stress results in can physical emotional and mental health problems”.   The Effects of Stress happen pressure or tension from work, study etc. Stress can physical emotional, and mental health problems.      Finally, I thouht detail information this text was easy. But Identify cause and effect, cause/effect Markers, and complete the sentence are difficult. So, I practiced more read books, article, and written practice. My attitude towards the lesson was difficult.

“Comparison and Contrast” I studied about “Hurricane Andrew and Hurricane Katrina” and “Men and Women: Do They Speak the Same Language?” I read text and analyse similarities and differences. The difference between “Hurricane Andrew and Hurricane Katrina”. Hurricane Andrew a category 5 hurricane its wind of 175 miles per hour. Storm surges nearly 17 feet. Estimated property damage was $25 billion and 26 people died. Hurricane Katrina a category 3 hurricane with wind of 120 miles per hour. A storm surges 12 feet. More than 1,800 people died and property damage was $81 billion. The similarities are caused suffering and devastation to the people. I thought this text was very easy. "Descriptive" I studied about to the describe place. I read the text Budapest.  Then, I discuss and analyses different genres of text with friends and answer the question.   To the describe Budapest it is located on the Danube River in a Western Hungary and it tourist attractions such as Middle Ages, Gothic house, Buda Castle, and Citadel.       Next, I read the text Prague. I discuss different genres of text with friends and answer the question. To the describe the city of Prague and its uniqueness.      After that, I read about text 4. The text describes people and answer the questions.      Finally, I thought detail information this text is easy. But, In identify significance of discourse markers and analyse text organization are difficult. So, I practiced more read books, novels etc. My attitude towards the lesson was not easy.

Comparison and Contrast

On Monday 6th March 2017. I learned about procedure continue . We did exercise 3 in the text about how to use a toaster and answer the questions.      Then I learnt the new lesson "Comparison and Contrast", discussed about "fruits and provinces" and wrote the contrast and the similarity on the paper. After, I read a paper sheet and did the exercise. I didn't find easy or difficult because some words I ever found and some words were new. I solved the problems by asking my friends and then they explained.  I use scanning for this lesson because it must analyze how they similarities or difference. I think this lesson use more analyze than last lessons.

                                                          On Monday 20th February 2017 I studied unit: 4 "Procedure" about the purpose is to tell the reader how to do or make something, the information is presented in a logical sequence of event, and most common example of a procedural text was a recipe. These texts are usually written in the present tense. The types of procedural, text organization and language feature  Then, I read about procedure Recipe for Banana Cake. Narrative (Continue) and Descriptive       On Monday 30th January 2017. I learned narrative continue about creative development. I discussed the story's symbols with friends. Then   I studied unit: 3 “Descriptive”  Descriptive text was a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose was to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.    Generic Structure Descriptive text has structure as below: Identification; identifying the phenomenon to be described. Description; describing the phenomenon in parts, qualities, or and characteristics. Narrative (Continue)      On Sunday 29th January 2017. The teacher taught me continues last week. I started class with check homework that the teacher instructed me to do. I learned the new lesson was narratives continued. We read about the second part of the story “Secrets” by Tim Winton and did exercises. A summary of the first part of the story.      Kylie feels left out from her mother and Philip's activities. She becomes interested in the chickens in the yard. Somehow her secret helps her to feel less lonely. She finds a second egg and then finds out where others are being laid by an unhealthy-looking hen.    She was happy sharing the secret with hen. Philip tells her that not to open the lid of the bore well but she does. She looks on her photo album, misses her father and wants to live with him.   On Monday 23rd January 2017. I read "An Excursion to the Botanic Garden". We analyzed what's orientation, events and reorientation. Then we chose the correct answer and answered the questions. After that I read a news reports about five Vietnamese nationals were arrested for stealing cash.      I think this news is very important, now ASEAN is opened already. The member of ASEAN can come to our country easily for work or travel.      Then we read “Investigation report”.  It was about the couple was stopped by the policeman because they were exceeding the speed limit on the Dumbarton highway in a truck but finally, they escaped. We didn't have enough time to do this exercise.  I think to answered questions very quickly if I highlighted an orientation that are what, who, when, where.    On Monday 16th January 2017. We learned about “What is recount?” I don’t know but teacher explained that about this recount is a text which retells events or experiences in the past. Its purpose is either to inform or to entertain the audience. There is no complication among the participants and that differentiates from narrative.   Recount is told someone about something or events or experiences in the past. The authors will use past simple tense in write sentence because it is event or experience in which past, so it requires a sentence that is past. Generic Structure of Recount 1. Week 1 Course introduction and Recount       On Monday 9th January, It’s the first class. She checked the member in the class and talked about ours holiday. Then she explained about this course. I studied about “A Discourse Approach in Reading” that we were instructed by Assistant Professor Dr. Usa Noytim. She told the students to talk with a friend about activities and gave the worksheet to the students. We matched the following words with the correct genres of text.      Then she told me find meaning of vocabulary. This course is benefit and important for me and I felt happy. The activity that I completed the sentences was difficult for me because I made a lot of mistakes. I solved this problem by discussing it with my friend.
